If you are a person who looks for natural remedies for hair growth, you may have read about the link between Korean red ginseng and hair growth. Recent clinical studies have examined the efficacy of ginseng in the treatment of alopecia. But do researchers really prove that Korean red ginseng is suitable for hair growth?
What is the Link Between Ginseng and Hair Growth?
Ginseng may promote hair growth and reduce hair loss. Korean red ginseng is also believed to increase the number of dermal papilla cells in the scalp by preventing their natural cell death. Ginseng may also stimulate the scalp, encouraging hair growth. Studies show that ginseng also reduces stress when ingested, and reduced stress can help prevent or slow hair loss.
Ginseng is also found in shampoos and conditioners because of its stimulating benefits. However, the effectiveness of topical ginseng in a shampoo or conditioner is uncertain.
Research Studies on Ginseng and Hair Growth
Based on one clinical study, ginseng and hair growth may in fact be linked, helping toprevent hair loss and regrow hair in people with alopecia areata. Professor Sang-Wook Son of Korea University College of Medicine followed 131 people with alopecia areata for 12 weeks. One of two groups was given corticosteroids as treatment, since alopecia has autoimmune properties, and the other group was given cortiocosteroids plus ginseng.
When the researchers compared the effects of corticosteroids on hair growth versus Korean red ginseng, they saw promising, although not statistically significant differences between the two groups. Based on their findings, they concluded that the herb was effective because it contains medicinal components called ginsenosides that have anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties.
Korean Ginseng for Hair Growth and Minoxidil
Much like minoxidil, Korean red ginseng is known to reduce blood pressure, and this is likely the reason that it has similar rates of hair regrowth compared to minoxidil.
However, when comparing Korean red ginseng vs. AminoMar® vs. minoxidil for hair growth, only the marine complex AminoMar is a drug free, nutrient-rich extract. AminoMar is found exclusively in Viviscal supplements. The proprietary marine complex has been shown to increase hair thickness and reduce shedding in clinical studies.
In addition, because AminoMar is drug free, it is a good choice for users who are concerned about using a strong topical hair loss drug such as minoxidil. Korean red ginseng is also drug free, but herbal supplements can be difficult to regulate, with inconsistent dosages, purity and side effects.
When searching for a hair growth remedy that works in line with your natural hair growth cycle, the best course of action is to boost your nutritional intake with a healthy hair diet or a complete, clinically researched hair growth supplement such as Viviscal, which has been shown to effectively promote hair growth.
