5 steps to take against thinning hair and hair loss

Beauty blogger and makeup addict Nicole Townsend gives an inside peek into her favorite at-home and instant beauty remedies for thinning hair on her blog Pretty in the Windy City. You can read her original article here.

It’s no secret that our hair is our crown and glory, so losing it can be devastating. While there isn’t a simple answer to what causes hair loss, there are certain things that attribute to sudden hair loss including excessive styling chemicals, stress, post-pregnancy, hormonal imbalances (as during menopause), or alopecia. (It’s important to note that alopecia should be diagnosed by a medical professional through a skin biopsy or regular exam.)

The good news about thinning hair is that there are lots of beauty products and DIY recipes that will help you retain your sanity and your hair.

1. Special Ingredient: Amla in Indian Gooseberry Oil

Indian gooseberry oil is free of chemicals and made of a nourishing fruit called amla. The oil is jam-packed with iron and vitamin C, which promotes healthy hair growth from root to tip. Nicole’s tip: If you prefer, use this product as a hot oil treatment a few times each week.

2. Licorice Root Paste

A DIY recipe that you can try at home is licorice root paste. “It’s an herb that prevents hair loss,” says Nicole, “and a bevy of other health concerns.” Similar to the pores on your face, pores on your scalp can become clogged, causing a blockage on your hair follicles. Licorice root helps to open those pores and promote healthy looking hair growth. Nicole’s licorice root paste recipe: Add one tablespoon of ground licorice root, one cup of milk and a teaspoon of saffron. Apply the paste directly to bald patches and leave on overnight. Wash your hair in the morning and style normally. For maximum results, apply 2-3 times per week.

3. Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera gel is an inexpensive product that that contains enzymes that promote healthy looking hair. It also promotes a pH balance on the scalp that can help eliminate dry scalp and dandruff. Apply aloe vera gel directly to your scalp and massage thoroughly. Style your hair normally.

4. Onion Juice

“I can already hear the audible gasps when I tell folks that onion juice is great for combating hair loss,” Nicole writes. “It sounds super gross, and the smell isn’t ideal either. But beauty is pain, right?” Onion juice contains sulfur, which helps to improve blood circulation in the scalp, promoting the ideal environment for hair growth. Apply the onion juice directly to the scalp and cover with a shower cap. Leave on for 30-40 minutes, and then shampoo. Try mixing onion juice with olive oil to minimize the onion scent. Try this method 2-3 times per week to see if you find any relief.
